Merakamo

Once upon a time, I said that I was not down with Ethiopian cuisine…… simply because of the one time that I ate it and the Injura left a sour taste in my mouth. It was really hard for me to enjoy anything else on the plate because it was sooo sour. I wrote off the cuisine as a whole as the bread is so central to the cuisine and this was lauded as the most authentic Ethiopian in London. ⠀

I’ve always walked past @merkamo.ethiopian in @oldspitalfieldsmarket market and thought the display looked so vibrant and wholesome. Once again the visual stimuli overruled my previous experiences and I ordered. Have to say that I really loved all of the different lentils, salads, couscous and vegetables. I felt very virtuous with every wholesome bite. And you know what… the Injura was not as sour as the time that i had it before.⠀

Fayre Share

They always say sharing is caring… They obviously did not mean food… that is before i checked out @fayreshare. Really love the concept of this place… you can order all of the dishes (and cocktails) in 1,2 or 4 portion sharing plates. The food is served family style in a room that is styled like a family home. Clever Eh? The food itself is hearty and generous as you’d expect with this kind of concept. I wish I lived closer as this would be the perfect neigbouhood haunt as they have just launched brunch. .

Wahaca Summer Menu

Summertime snacking at @wahaca . Completely smitten with the new Summer Menu at Wahaca… I’ve always liked Wahaca, but I think that I’m leaning toward the feelings of love for the place. The summer menu feels like they are taking a few more risks to push the boat out. The highlights were the perfectly layered Mexico City Nachos with some goodness on each tortilla. ? Just look at that pea studded ricotta tostada, felt both smugly virtuous and decadent at the same time! The summer menu is across all branches now. .⠀

Coal Rooms – Full English

The full English from @coalrooms is supposed to be a sharing affair, but I’d love to have a little one on one time with it. Do you blame me? Look at those thick cut rashers of coffee cured bacon, sourdough with smalec, smoked pigs head blood pudding, fried eggs, marrow fried field mushrooms and meaty sausage. ⠀

The Coal Rooms – New Lunch Menu

I love this photo for 2 reasons…. It has this Hockney-esque vibe about it… and those flatbreads are insanely good. @Coalrooms have launched their new flatbread weekday lunchtime menu. They take their tip to tail approach to these flatbreads with pulled ham hocks and picalilli, am an homage to the Reuben with salt beef and a decadent welsh rarebit flatbread. Seriously loved them all. They are available to eat in from their newly redesigned cafe space or to go. .

Old Compton Brasserie

Someone once said that the only thing that never changes is that things will change.  (Or something like that). London is always changing and that one thing that I really love.  Love how the changes subtly happen in areas that you don’t visit that often.  One of the quickest changing areas for me is Soho, other than the areas that I’ve lived in, it’s the one area of town that I’ve spent in varying levels of drunkenness in.

It’s fun to regale the history of what used to be in each location… Like the Fetish Shop that became a Hotel Chocolate, then The Nata café.  How about my favourite late night sandwich shop, Old Compton Café that somehow became another less flamboyant Balan’s.

How about the video game arcade on Old Compton Street where you used to be able to play that dancing game in the window (Such good memories of that place) that became soulless eatery that was Muriel’s to its latest incarnation of the Old Compton Brasserie.

Dum Biryani Hyderabad Brunch

If you ask for recommendations for an Indian Brunch in London, I guarantee you that 99% of the responses will say Dishoom. I would wholeheartedly agree with that response, in fact, that would be the recommendation that would come to mind. Yes, the breakfast/brunch offering there is pretty amazing… (drooling now thinking about that bacon naan), but I don’t think there have ever been any contenders to take that crown…. Well, that is until Dum Biryani launched their Hyderabad Brunch offering two weeks ago.

Oslo Hackney Summer Menu Review

You know how you often dismiss a place based on what you think it would be… for example, a pub serving Japanese food or buying choux from a street food seller.   Things that you thought that never would be good but turn out to be great. I’ve only known OLSO as being a music venue so always assumed that the food would be bog standard pub grub.   You can imagine how surprised I was when I tried out the new summer menu.

3 of My Favourite Small Batch Ice Creams in London

If you follow me on Instagram (and if you dont.. why not?) you know that I’m obsessed with ice cream.  I’m somewhat an ice cream snob… I say somewhat and really mean a total Ice Cream snob.  I mean life is too short for the run of the mill ice cream.  As wankery, as it sounds, small batch is the best.  These alchemists of ice cream really know their craft and use the best ingredients.  Most importantly they have a major passion for the creamy stuff and they are all bloody lovely people too!
